Routine Service
8 to 11 weeks from the day your application is received at a passport agency or center to the day you receive your new passport.
Expedited Service
5 to 7 weeks from the day your application is received at a passport agency or center to the day you receive your new passport.
Expedited at Agency
If you have international travel within 14 calendar days, you can make an appointment at a passport agency or center.
Life-or-Death Emergency
If you have a life-or-death emergency and need to travel within 72 hours (3 business days), contact the National Passport Information Center.
Official U.S. Government Passport Guidelines
According to the U.S. Department of State:
- Form DS-11 β Completed but not signed until instructed by an acceptance agent
- Proof of U.S. citizenship β Original or certified copy of birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or previous U.S. passport
- Photo ID β Valid driver's license, government ID, or military ID
- Passport photo β 2x2 inches, white background, taken within last 6 months
- Fee payment β Separate checks or money orders for application and execution fees
You can renew your passport by mail using Form DS-82 if:
- Your most recent passport is undamaged and can be submitted with your application
- It was issued when you were 16 years of age or older
- It was issued within the last 15 years
- It was issued in your current name (or you can document your name change)
According to travel.state.gov:
"If you have a life-or-death emergency and need to travel within 72 hours (3 business days), contact the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778 to make an appointment at a passport agency or center. You must provide proof of the emergency and international travel."
